Cordless People

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything.

‭John 15:5 CEB‬

What would happen if you cut the cord to your TV? What happens when an electrical line falls near your house? The light, the power, is all gone. Our cell phones light the way for a time but eventually, all will be dead and dark. The same happens when you cut yourself off from Jesus.

I once heard a priest say we need to be plugged into Jesus. He said a TV is useless unless it’s plugged into a power source. We are useless unless we are plugged into Jesus.

I started to think of all the electronics and how that analogy is becoming outdated with all of the cordless technology now. But then I realized the analogy has, in fact, adapted to continue to represent our world. People today also go “cordless.” They flaunt their success for everyone to see and accept all of the praise as though it was done through them alone. But the truth is, sooner or later, a cordless vacuum will run out of power. Because, as it turns out, it was not the vacuum powering itself after all. Ultimately, it still needs a power source. And it will have to return to be plugged in, or it will die.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

‭Acts 1:8 NIV‬
